No. Direct Access physical therapy went into effect in October 2003. Direct Access allows a client to seek an evaluation and treatment from a physical therapist without visiting their family doctor or an orthopedic doctor first. This allows for immediate treatment of an injured area. As further diagnostic tests or interventions are warranted, the physical therapist will then contact the MD or DO for consultation. Quality of care improves as all professionals begin to work together to decrease the client's symptoms.
