Burning leg pain can occur from an injury to the back or because of a tight muscle in the buttock or due to an injury to the leg itself. Typically, when the leg burns, an injury to a nerve has occurred. A nerve can be pinched at the vertebral level due to a joint injury, disc protrusion or herniation. Often, a hip rotator muscle called the "piriformis" tightens and causes pressure on the "sciatic" nerve which is a branch of a nerve from the lumbar spine. A physical therapist is trained to perform special tests to determine the cause of the pain and can also refer you to a physician if further diagnostic tests are needed.
