Difficulty balancing can be caused by many different reasons including, but not limited to, inner ear problems, neurological problems (i.e. stroke or Parkinson’s disease), orthopedic issues (i.e. lower extremity fracture, joint replacement or strain/sprain) or diabetes neuropathy. A physical therapist can perform an evaluation including the use of a balance scale to determine the cause and extent of the balance difficulties and then set a treatment plan to enhance balance thru stretching, strengthening and exercises focused on balance retraining.
